These are not our competition. We need to find what is.

Site should focus on two aspects:
A.movie recommendations (Aah, that's the movie i want to see ..)
B. immediate follow-up action (now what ?!)

A. Recco
Every Movie page shud have some stats
-Rank by avg rating
-Wishlist
-Recommend

Quick recco:
There should to be a rating meter (possibly customized for user)
let's not go into algorithm aspect, but start with a simple data crunching screen to give
-most viewed movies
-highest rated movies

movies need to be filtered
Filter by
-my friends (must)
-language
-genre
-cast and crew (!?)

B. About the follow-up action
movies could be acquired thru' various channels

Buy

• Online, in store (new/used)
• cable VDO on demand
• go to theater if currently playing
  

Rent

• Online (netflicks, BB total access)
• Instore (BB/Hollywood)

Borrow

• from public library
• from a friend who owns it
  
• borrow a rented movie
  

Free

• VDO download by p2p
  
• VDO sites like youtube
• on TV
  

Need to figure how each could be facilitated. simplest form is by providing ready links to sites, with possibly sending the movie name to the site api. (i have seen this done very well. wud post site name when i remember)


Then there's the social aspect. If bunch of guys are interested in seeing a movie, they can follow with a social activity like movie club. Friday GTG. Plan to go out to movies etc .. best to integrate with some calendar function like yahoo or google.
